Mountainside Residence

Envisioned by the architect, this fireplace required a multitude of materials and finishes. The appearance is a consistent copper finish, however the soffit is steel, the vertical pipes are copper plated aluminum and the bottom is 1/8” copper plate. The soffit was installed first with an internal frame and an opening large enough that allowed access to bolt to the ceiling and wall. Next came the ducting and liner, which we clad in a tube steel frame. The completed copper mantle, with a texture created by etching with nitric acid, was attached both to this frame and the wall. Precise measurements were taken between the mantle and the soffit. The vertical tubes are cut sections of aluminum tube, welded together from the back side, as needed to install them in sections with concealed attachments. The aluminum was sanded to a clean finish and then plated in copper. The patina was a five step process.
