When the Denver Judicial Building underwent a transformation in 2011, we spent four months collaborating with the architect to bring the project into budget while maintaining their vision for these 425 LF of Atrium railing. The golden tone of the bronze was a critical element, as it spoke to the theme of “legacy” and played off the golden dome of another building viewed from the balcony. The gold tones were created with a combination of polishing compound and heat. The bronze arcs were built from ¼” x 1” imported flat bar and bent on a CNC roller to minimize material loss. Hand forged rivets were used in the mock up but were overly labor intensive. Instead we used custom machined bronze sex bolts with knurls that prevented the rivets from spinning while hand-tightened with our custom-made tool. All welds are concealed. The railing was built in 10’ sections which maximized the size of the freight elevator. Bronze arcs were left off at the seams and installed in the field.
